Identity Based Habits: Stop Trying and Start Becoming
If you’ve been doing all the “right things” but still feel off… today will help.
Because sometimes it’s not that you need *more* effort—sometimes you need a new *identity to live from*.

As a licensed counselor, self-image coach, intenSati Leader, and yoga teacher, I help professional women activate a powerful positive self image by tapping into their creative genius—so they can create a life of passion ~ on purpose. No more sleep walking through life! This is the time to consciously create a life you love!

This is also part of a bigger rhythm I teach each week through the 4 Pillars of consciously living a life you love. For your weekly video series, check out my Wake Up and Win channel here: Wake Up And Win

I like to define our human experience through these 4 States of Being:
Mindset, Heartset, Physical Being, and our Spiritual Being.

Today, we’re starting with Mindset, and we’re using the 1% Method—one small step each day—to end autopilot and start consciously creating your life.

The “Why do I still feel off?” moment

Have you ever had a week where you *checked all the boxes*—you worked out, drank water, got things done—yet something still felt heavy or misaligned?

That’s a sign you might be trying to change your *habits* without changing the *identity* behind them.

And here’s the truth: *habits don’t stick because you “try harder.”* Habits stick when they match who you believe you are.

What Identity-Based Habits Actually Are (and what they’re not)

*Identity-based habits* are habits that come from the inside out—based on the person you believe you are becoming.

Joe Dispenza explains it like this:
*Personality = what you think, feel, and do all day long.*
So if your identity is tied to your personality, and your personality is made up of what you repeatedly think, feel, and do… then your thoughts, emotions, and actions are all habitual. This is excellent news!!! This means that what you think all day long, what you feel all day long, and what you do all day long is changeable!

 Habits are breakable and re-creatable!

Today we’re talking specifically about your thoughts ~ your Mindset.

Because here’s the empowering part:
You are not every thought you think.
It’s time to write a new story!

A simple visual for you to give a try. Imagine a garden full of weeds and you want to plant some beautiful flowers and yummy vegetables.

Think of your mind like a garden. Some thoughts are nourishing. Others are weeds—old beliefs, mental chatter, self-doubt loops that keep you stuck in the same rut.

This is your permission slip to start *weeding*.
Pull out what you no longer want. Toss it. Make room for the new seeds to grow.

And then? You *rewire and fire* new thought patterns—so you can create new neural pathways and a new way of being.

Common Misconceptions

Let’s name a few mindset myths that keep women stuck:

1. “I am my thoughts.”
No—you *have* thoughts. You are the one observing them. You get to choose which thoughts to focus on. Remember, what you focus on expands.

2. “My thoughts aren’t changeable.”
They are. It takes intention and repetition (and yes, practice). Your brain is firing and rewiring all of the time.

3. “If I still think negatively, I’m failing.”
Not at all. Awareness is progress. “Enjoy the presence of the pause”—that moment you notice the thought before it runs your day. The practice involves interrupting negative thoughts (pull the weed) and choose a better feeling thought (plant a new seed).

Why This Matters For Stress Relief, Self-Image, Energy, and Daily Life

Your thoughts matter because they help define who you are—and action follows thought.

If your inner dialogue is:
- “I’m behind.”
- “I’m not good enough.”
- “I never follow through.”

…your nervous system responds as if that’s true.

A thought like “I’m not good enough” often triggers the stress response—tight chest, shallow breathing, foggy focus, irritability, overthinking. That stress doesn’t just stay in your head. It impacts your energy, your habits, your confidence, and the way you show up in your relationships and work.

I’ve seen this so many times: a woman is doing everything “right” on paper, but her internal story is harsh, pressuring, and unforgiving—so nothing feels satisfying. She’s working hard, but not really living.

That’s why we use the 1% Method.
Not an all-or-nothing transformation. Not a “new me by Monday” mindset.
Just one small step every day—because that’s what’s sustainable.

1% Improvement 1 Day at a Time

Ask yourself: “What is the lifestyle I actually want to create for myself?”
Not just what you want to accomplish… but who you want to BE while you’re living it.

How to Build Identity-Based Habits (starting with thoughts)

You can’t change what you don’t see.
So step one is not “think positive.”
Step one is: notice.

Step 1: Notice your thoughts (catch the pattern)
Start paying attention to what your mind repeats. Especially during stress, comparison, or uncertainty.

A powerful way to do this is simple, structured journaling—let your stream of consciousness pour onto paper, like *Morning Pages* (Julia Cameron style). You’re not trying to sound smart. You’re just letting the truth come out onto the page. P.S. You throw this away when you’re done - remember - weeding the garden.

1% Action: Set a timer for 5 minutes and write whatever you’re thinking.

Step 2: Write the opposite (shift from “don’t want” → “want” → “I am”)
For every negative thought you notice, write the opposite.

Example:
- *Don’t want:* “I don’t want to feel overwhelmed.”
- *Want:* “I want to feel calm and capable.”
- *I am:* “I am calm, capable, and supported.”

This isn’t pretending life is perfect. This is choosing the story you want to live into.

Step 3: Practice the new identity daily (the 3 P’s)
Your success comes down to the *3 P’s: Practice, Practice, Practice.*

Identity-based habits are built through repetition—small daily high 5’s for the person you’re becoming.

A Real-Life Day Example

Let’s say you wake up and your mind goes:
“I’m already behind.”

Instead of letting that thought run the show, you pause—enjoy the presence of the pause—and you write:

- Don’t want: “I don’t want to start my day in panic.”
- Want: “I want to start grounded.”
- I am: “I am grounded. I choose to take the next best step.”

Then you take one 1% action: drink water, stretch for 2 minutes, or write three “I choose” statements. That’s it. Small—but powerful. That’s how you *Wake Up And Win*!

Remember this:

Action follows thought—your thoughts fuel everything.

Write this down:
Be who you choose to be each and every day.  And write it this way “I choose to be my best self each and every day”.

All of life is a stage—don’t be an extra in your own movie.

No judgment zone.  This is simply your opportunity to notice how you’re showing up. Does it bring you happiness? Does it bring regret? If not—make the change. You get to consciously create your life.

Now is the time to take action! Get out your notebook and pen and answer these questions:
What could change if you believed in yourself?
Who do you choose to be?

What will be your daily action steps? (just 5–10 minutes a day):
Journaling rewires the brain and taps into the subconscious mind. Today, write:
- I choose…
- I want…
- I am…
(Repeat daily—1% improvement, 1 day at a time. You’ve got this!)
