What if I only focus my attention on what's going well? Sometimes this question confuses people. But what about the bad stuff in the world? What if I ignore my bad habits, my critical spouse, my nagging boss? And?

What might happen if you read about the millions of dollars going to non profits to do good in the world? Can you name 3 good causes off the top of your head? What if you only focused on when your spouse compliments you or does something that makes you laugh? What if you focused only on your good habits?

What if?

The reticular activating system or RAS - a network of neurons in the brain that act as a gatekeeper of information. What information you may ask. It brings important information to your awareness. How does it determine what’s important? Good question! Whatever you focus on - you are telling it that that information is important, and so it gives you more of that. It sort of sounds like algorithms of social media, funny!

So maybe you’ve been noticing a lot of negativity, self criticism, judgement, lack, anything that doesn’t feel good. And now you’re understanding that you have an impact on how you feel and what you let into your space.

You want more good in? Great! All you have to do is shift your focus. The RAS pays attention to what YOU pay attention to.

“When you feel good you do good”

Here’s how:
  1. Gratitude. Look for something to be grateful for - cup of coffee, children, the sunrise - this list is truly endless. Find something that will make you smile.
  2. Meditation. Just 5 minutes every day of focusing simply on your breathing or a tranquil and passive scene will bring a smile to your face, calm your nervous system, and ease tension.
  3. Smile. Notice what your face is doing. Soften it, make a goofy face in the mirror at yourself.

Remember, when we feel good we do good. We can’t create peace if we are constantly in anger. We can’t relax if we are constantly tense. We can’t expect love if we are focused on hate. We have to make a choice. Choose to focus on the good and you will see more good, be more good, and create more good!!!
