It’s so normal these days to hear people say that the first thing, the very first thing that they do in the morning is pick up a device that gives them a view into other people's lives. This view stirs up jealousy, lack, envy, not good enough emotions. This activity sucks the joy right out of your body, heaviness sets in and you wonder why you bother to get out of bed at all.
This all happens before they get out of bed in the morning. This happens on autopilot. This destructive habit - yes habit - was created (by you) long ago and now seems to be the norm of your life, and most of you don’t even realize it. Bigger than that, you are unaware of your personal power to do something different.
When I have conversations with people about this behavior, the overall feeling associated with it is self pity, shame, guilt. So why do we do it? Are we addicted to feeling bad about ourselves? Are we so unaware of what we do that we just do it without even thinking? As if we are being controlled by something else?
For some of you, you might remember the days before computers, before everyone had a phone in their back pockets. The days when you would take a vacation for a week or two and no one - literally no one could call you unless you gave them the hotel information of where you were staying. But what if you were camping? This was a time when ‘off the grid’ was a pretty normal thing.
Holy cow! What then? How did people find you? How did you get by without knowing the daily dramas of the world?
Somehow we did. We made it. We thrived even. With all of this technology, we were sold a story that our lives would be easier (is this true for you?). We were convinced that we would be happier (how about you?). We were promised a better life (do you feel better?).
Mental health issues are on the rise - suicide, childhood illnesses, depression, anxiety, and so much more.
I know, this is probably depressing you just a little bit. But hold on, there is hope. There is a solution to every problem.
The problem: we were told to believe in something outside of us, something that would have all the answers that we need.
The problem: we believed it.
We can blame the ‘big guy’ all day long. Point the finger out there, complain and throw a fit. Or we can take our power back. Your power lies within you. Deep within you know exactly what fuels your passions, brings you joy and creates calm in your mind and body. This is not a mystery.
Oftentimes when I introduce meditation to my clients I am met with “I can’t meditate”, “it’s too hard to focus”, “my mind is too busy”. Again, these are just excuses to keep us from really knowing, appreciating, loving, and owning who we are. It’s like push ups, the only way you are going to get strong arms is to start with one. Then all of a sudden you’re doing 10 pushups and are shocked how simple it is once you made the decision that you wanted strong arms.
I have yet to hear one person tell me “I love scrolling on my phone when my eyes first open. It feels so good. I feel more confident and excited for my day.” But we keep doing this thing that brings us down.
It’s time to wake up!

Oh yeah, and have you heard my story about how I discovered meditation when I was 18 and it cured my panic attacks, insomnia and anxiety? I’d love to share that story with you and how you too can use meditation as a mind training tool to solve any problem that you are facing. Let’s set up a coffee chat and explore together!
